Indoor Junior Atlantics Qualifying

Qualifying for the 2016 Indoor Junior Atlantics will consist of both an indoor circuit (4 spots) and provincial qualifying events (8 spots) to fill a maximum draw size of 12 for each division at the Indoor Atlantics.  Players must play in their 2016 age group.

Indoor Circuit:

The Indoor ATA Circuit will consist of 4 Circuit Events, one to be held in each of the four Provinces and will qualify 4 players in each division directly into Indoor Atlantics.  The winner of each circuit event will qualify automatically.  As with the outdoor circuit, if the same player wins multiple events, the spot(s) will be filled from a point’s race (see details below).  Note that these are closed events for players in Atlantic Canada only.

The following is the schedule of these circuit events for 2015/2016:

Event #1:  November 6-8, 2015:  Prince Edward Island

Event #2:  November 20-22, 2015:  Nova Scotia

Event #3:  December 4-6, 2015:  New Brunswick

Event #4:  January 15-17, 2016:  Newfoundland & Labrador

Registration for the above events is done through the respective Provincial Tennis Association in which the event is being held.  General format, depending on numbers, will be standard draws with consolation.  Provinces have the option to make modifications to the format.

Points Race:

As indicated above, non-winners of a Circuit Event may be eligible for one of the 4 direct entry spots into Indoor Atlantics if there has been a multiple circuit event winner.  A player’s best 2 tournament results will be used to determine standings for a point’s race using the table below.  At the conclusion of the 4 circuit events, the player with the most points may be awarded a spot.  If one or more players are tied, then the below is the process for determining the spot allocation:

  1. Head to head results if played each other at the 4 qualifying events
  2. Rogers Rankings

Provincial Qualifying Events:

The remaining 8 spots per division at Indoor Atlantics will be determined through provincial qualifying events.  This will consist of 4 Closed Qualifying events, one to be held in each of the four Provinces that are only open to players in the respective province.   Each province has 2 spots per division.  These 4 events will be held on the following dates:

Provincial Qualifiers:

February 6 & 7, 2016:  Newfoundland & Labrador, Prince Edward Island

February 13 & 14, 2016:  New Brunswick, Nova Scotia

Registration for the above events is done through the respective Provincial Tennis Association in which the event is being held.  General format, depending on numbers, will be standard draws with consolation.  Provinces have the option to make modifications to the format.

EACH PROVINCE WILL HAVE 2 SPOTS AVAILABLE IN EACH AGE GROUP FOR EACH GENDER WHICH QUALIFIES FOR THE INDOOR ATLANTICS.  PROVINCES HAVE THE OPTION TO ASSIGN SPOTS TO PLAYERS WHO WERE UNABLE TO PLAY THE QUALIFIER AT THEIR DISCRETION.

Unused Spots

If a province is unable to fill all of their spots in any age group/gender, the unused spots would then be opened up to players in the other provinces who did not qualify.  If there are more players than spots available, current rankings will be used to determine who receives the spots.  No wildcard spots into Atlantics will be available through the ATA, any requests need to go through the respective province as part of the unused spot allocation.

Nationals Wildcards

On rare occasion, the ATA will accept requests for a wildcard spot from a player who is unable to attend the Atlantic Championships for valid reason (i.e. out of province training, injury). A maximum of one (1) wildcard per age group per gender may be awarded to players with valid reason who is deemed to be one of the top players in their division.  Any request for a wildcard must be sent to the ATA administrator (Mark Thibault) at least 10 days in advance of the first day of the Atlantic Championship tournament.  The awarding of a wildcard will require unanimous consent of the 4 Provincial Tennis Associations and will be communicated to players prior to the start of play of the Atlantics.

Also, if a player who is unable to participate in the Atlantic Championships and is not eligible for a wildcard is interested in being considered for an unused spot into the National Championships, they must make their interest known to the ATA administrator prior to Atlantics.  They could be considered for an unused spot if no other players who participated in the Atlantics are interested in attending Nationals.
