$6,000 NB Open Tennis Championships

The top seeds prevailed in both of the singles draws at the NB Open which wrapped up today at the Rothesay Tennis Club.  In the men’s singles event, top seeded Phil Anderson of Halifax defeated #2 seed Luke Saunders of Halifax 6/3, 6/3 to claim the biggest prize of the weekend.  Anderson advanced to the final with a win over Hielke Moore of Fredericton 6/2, 6/0 in one semi-final while Saunders advanced defeating John Oxner 6/3, 6/3 of Halifax in the other semi-final.  In ladies singles, top seeded Melika LeBlanc of Moncton defeated Niki Karol of Fredericton 6/3, 6/1 to win the title.  LeBlanc defeated Michelle Zarei of Quispamsis 6/3, 7/5 in one semi-final while Karol took out Julie Devlin of Fredericton 6/3, 6/2 in the other semi-final.   In men’s doubles, Stefan Hall of Charlottetown and partner Hielke Moore of Fredericton won the title when an injury to Saunders forced he and partner Phil Anderson to default the finals.  In mixed doubles, the duo of Melika LeBlanc of Moncton and Nick Dempsey of Nackawic defeated David Vaughan and Julie Devlin of Fredericton 6/2, 6/3 to take the title.  A total of $6,000 in cash prizes was handed at the tournament.
