The Provincial outdoor summer tournament season kicked off this past weekend as the Wilmot Park Tennis Courts played host to the Fredericton Open.  Several of the provinces top players took part including the best male player in New Brunswick, Hielke Moore of Fredericton, who claimed the men’s open singles title with a 6/2, 6/4 win over Dan Godwin of Fredericton in the finals.  Moore advanced to the finals with a 6/0, 6/1 win over Rob Thompson of Fredericton in one semi-final while Godwin took out Alexandre Drouin of Moncton 6/3, 6/1 in the other semi-final.  In ladies singles, the #1 ranked player in the province, Michelle Zarei of Quispamsis defeated the #2 ranked player Niki Karol of Fredericton with a come from behind win by scores of 2/6, 6/3, 11/9.  The men’s doubles final had David Vaughan of Fredericton and Alexandre Drouin of Moncton upset the top seeded team of Moore and Steve Wolf, both of Fredericton winning 6/4, 4/6, 10/0.  Drouin and Vaughan advanced to the final by defeated Bill Johnson of Sussex and Pete Sesplankis of Grand Manan 6/3, 6/0 while Moore and Wolf took out Calvin Sutherland and Marc Deschenes of Fredericton 6/1, 6/1.  In mixed doubles, Julie Devlin and David Vaughan of Fredericton defeated Michelle Zarei and Kevin Brown of Quispamsis by scores of 6/1, 6/2.  In a 3 hour marathon match, Cade Nadeau of Quispamsis defeated Francis Cormier of Memramcook by scores of 6/4, 6/7, 10/7 to win the men’s 4.0 singles title.  Gabriel Fournier of Tracadie won the men’s singles consolation with a walk over win over Lucas LeBlanc of Bathurst.
