Bernard LaPointe of Moncton had an amazing weekend in Vancouver at the National Wheelchair Tennis Championships finishing 5th overall in men’s singles. Bernard was the only player from Atlantic Canada and the first player from New Brunswick to take part in the Wheelchair Nationals in over 15 years. He entered the tournament as the #7 ranked player in the country and was the #5 seed. In preliminary pool play, he went a perfect 4/0 with wins over Laurence Zalmanowitz of Alberta 7/5, 6/1, Paul Finkbeiner of BC 6/0, 6/0, the #3 ranked player in the country Marko Golic of Ontario 6/3, 6/4, and Ross MacDonald of BC 6/1, 6/0. This advanced him into the Championship Playoffs where he unfortunately lost a close match to the #5 ranked Canadian player Jean-Francois Sylvestre of Quebec by scores of 4/6, 6/1, 6/3. This resulted in a final placing of 5th overall, a great result for Bernard. He also competed in doubles with partner Jonathan Tremblay of Quebec winning their first round match over James Bernus and Samuel Unrau of Manitoba 6/2, 6/2 before losing to the #1 seeded team from Quebec in the quarterfinals.
